AI flashcard makers: turn your notes into cards

AI flashcard makers compared on what they read, free AI and price, plus three ways to make flashcards from your own notes here.

Last updated

A good AI flashcard maker reads your own material, writes cards you can edit and schedules them. Brainscape includes AI cards on its free plan. Quizlet and Knowt make study sets from notes. StudyVisually turns a PDF, a photo or notes into flashcards, concept cards, practice questions and a diagram; a free account makes 5 AI decks a month.

What to check in an AI flashcard maker

  1. It reads what you have

PDFs, slides, photos of handwritten notes or pasted text. Try a scanned PDF too: some tools only read text you can select.

  2. Cards stay true to your notes

AI can get a detail wrong. Pick a tool that builds cards only from your material and lets you edit every card.

  3. More than question and answer

Flashcards test recall. Concept cards, practice questions and diagrams from the same notes help you understand the topic first.

  4. It brings the cards back

Making cards is half the job. Check that they go on a spaced-repetition schedule, or you'll forget them anyway.

Questions people ask

What is the best free AI flashcard maker?

Brainscape's free plan includes AI to make hundreds of flashcards. RemNote's free plan has a small monthly AI allowance. Gemini Notebook makes flashcards free with a Google account. A free StudyVisually account makes 5 AI decks a month, each with flashcards, concept cards, practice questions and a diagram.

Can AI make flashcards from a PDF?

Yes. Brainscape, RemNote and StudyVisually all make flashcards from a PDF. In StudyVisually, the free plan reads uploads up to about 20 pages, and Premium also reads scanned PDFs. Each deck gets concept cards, flashcards, practice questions and a step-by-step diagram when your notes describe a process.

Can AI make flashcards from a photo of my notes?

Yes. In StudyVisually, take a photo of your notes or pick an image, and AI turns it into flashcards, concept cards and practice questions. A free account reads 3 photos a month. Write clearly and photograph one page at a time in good light for the best cards.

Are AI-made flashcards accurate?

Mostly, but check them. StudyVisually builds cards only from the material you give it, and you can edit any card. Read the deck once in Learn mode before you start reviewing, and fix anything that looks off. It takes a few minutes and saves you from memorising a mistake.
