Questions people ask
What is a microhabitat?
A microhabitat is a small area within a larger habitat with its own conditions. Under a log in a wood is damper and darker than the woodland floor, so woodlice and worms live there. Different microhabitats support different organisms in one place.
How do scientists estimate population size?
They sample the area with a quadrat, a square frame, in several random places. They count the organisms inside each, find the mean, then multiply by how many times the quadrat fits into the whole area. Random sampling avoids bias. Moving animals can be caught and marked instead.
