Analogy

USB-C for AI tools. Before it, every app needed its own custom cable for every tool.

In an agent

Expose your agent's tools as an MCP server (@modelcontextprotocol/sdk) and Claude Desktop, IDEs or your own agent can all use them.

Questions people ask

What is MCP, the Model Context Protocol?

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI apps to tools and data. You build an MCP server once that exposes your tools, and any MCP client, such as Claude Desktop, an IDE or your own agent, can use them. It works like USB-C for AI tools: one plug instead of a custom cable per app.

How do I expose my agent's tools over MCP in TypeScript?

Use the official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk package to create an MCP server and register each tool with a name, description and input schema, plus the function that runs it. Your existing tool functions can be reused as they are. Any MCP client can then discover and call them.
