Reversible reaction
A reaction that can go forwards and backwards. It is shown with a double arrow. In a closed container it can reach equilibrium, where both ways go at the same speed.

Analogy
Like a two-way street where cars travel both directions.
In practice
Heating blue copper sulfate crystals gives white powder and water. Adding water turns it blue again.

Flashcards
- What does a double arrow in an equation show? The reaction is reversible.
Questions people ask
What is equilibrium?
Equilibrium is reached in a closed container when the forward and backward reactions run at the same rate. The amounts of reactants and products stay constant, though the reactions continue. The reaction looks as if it has stopped, but both directions are still happening.
If a reaction is exothermic one way, what is it the other way?
Endothermic. The same amount of energy is released in one direction and taken in the other. Heating hydrated copper sulfate drives off water, which takes in energy. Adding water back releases the same energy as heat, and the crystals turn blue again.
