Introducing StudyVisually: seven ways to study one topic
By the StudyVisually teamPublished
StudyVisually is a free study app that turns a topic, or your own notes and PDFs, into seven ways to study it: concept cards, flashcards on a spaced-repetition schedule, predict-the-answer puzzles, timed explain-it questions, step-by-step diagrams, a map of your progress and a 20-minute daily mission. You can start without an account. Signing in with your email saves your progress across devices and lets AI build decks from your own material.
Why seven modes for one topic?
Because each one trains a different part of knowing something. Reading about an idea, recognising it, recalling it, applying it and explaining it are different skills, and exams and interviews test the last three. Seeing a topic from several angles also keeps a study session from turning into rereading, which feels productive and isn't (Active recall beats rereading).
What does each mode do?
| Mode | What you do | What it trains |
|---|---|---|
| Learn (concept cards) | Flip a card through plain words, an analogy, an example and how it is used | Understanding one idea at a time |
| Flashcards | Answer before you flip, then rate how it went | Recall, rescheduled with spaced repetition |
| Quiz (predict the answer) | Guess what a piece of code or a situation leads to, then check | Applying an idea instead of reciting it |
| Interview | Explain an idea out loud in 60 seconds, then compare with the key points | Saying it clearly under time pressure |
| Step by step (diagrams) | Step through a process, one move at a time | Following a sequence, like a pipeline or a cycle |
| Roadmap | See every part of a subject and how far you have got | Knowing where you are |
| Home | Today's 20-minute mission and your streak | Coming back every day |
The How it works page shows each mode on a real example.
What can I study?
Ready-made subjects, and your own material.
The first ready-made subject is a free guide to building AI agents with JavaScript: 9 parts and 106 concept cards, each also a free lesson page. More subjects are being written and reviewed, and will be added together. Every ready-made subject is free for everyone, including people without an account.
For your own material, sign in, then upload a PDF or text file or paste your notes, and AI drafts a deck in all the modes above. Every card can be edited or deleted. How to turn a PDF into flashcards with AI walks through it.
What is free, and what costs money?
Studying is free, with no ads: every mode, every ready-made subject, and progress saved in your browser or in your account. You only pay for heavier AI use.
- Free includes a few AI decks a month and a small number of AI gradings and explanations.
- Basic and Premium add more decks, bigger uploads and more AI feedback. Premium also reads scanned PDFs and lets you speak your interview answers.
- Teacher is free for teachers we approve. It adds share links, so a class can study a deck without making accounts.
The exact limits for each plan are on the pricing page. They come from the same table the app enforces.
Who is Tok?
Tok is the small robot who shows up across the app: cheering when you finish a session, thinking while a timer runs, sleepy when no cards are due. You can poke Tok. Poke it enough times in a row and it gets dizzy.
What happens to my data?
Without an account, your progress stays in your browser, and we never see it. With an account we keep your email, your progress and the decks you make. Text you send to AI features goes to OpenAI to write cards or check answers. The privacy policy has the full list, in plain words.
