## Analogy

Looking after a museum so future visitors can enjoy it.

## In practice

Breeding programmes in zoos and nature reserves help protect endangered species.

## Practice

### Flashcards

- **Name two conservation methods.** Protected nature reserves and captive breeding programmes.

### Interview questions

**Discuss ways to protect biodiversity.**

- Protect habitats in reserves
- Captive breeding and seed banks
- Laws and quotas on hunting and fishing
- Reduce pollution and recycle to cut waste

## Questions people ask

### What is captive breeding?

Captive breeding means breeding endangered animals in zoos or special centres where they are protected. Experts manage which animals breed to keep genetic variety. Some animals are later released into the wild. It is expensive, but has helped species like the California condor recover.

### What is a seed bank?

A seed bank stores seeds from many plant species in cold, dry conditions so they stay alive for years. If a plant disappears from the wild, it can be regrown from stored seed. Seed banks also protect crop varieties that might carry useful genes for the future.
