## How does StudyVisually work?

Add a PDF or paste your notes, AI turns them into a deck, and you study that deck 7 ways. Three steps from your own notes to your first card.

1. **Add your material**: Upload a PDF or a text file, or paste your notes. A free account reads about 20 pages per deck.
2. **AI builds your deck**: AI reads your notes and writes concept cards, flashcards, quiz questions and a step-by-step diagram. Then it plans them into 20-minute missions.
3. **Study it your way**: 7 ways to study one deck, from quick flashcards to a 60-second interview. Spaced repetition brings each flashcard back on the day it's due.

## What can I do with a flashcard deck?

Every deck you make from a PDF or your notes gets up to 7 study modes. You read concept cards, recall flashcards with spaced repetition, answer quiz questions, step through diagrams, explain out loud in 60 seconds, follow a roadmap and do a 20-minute daily mission. Try them below on real cards, from a small example deck about the heart or from the AI agents guide.

- **Home**: A 20-minute mission tells you what to study today. Tick the tasks, keep the streak.
- **Roadmap**: Every part of the topic on one path. The next part opens once you've read 80% of the one before.
- **Learn**: One idea on four faces: plain English, an analogy, an example and where it's used. Flip until it clicks.
- **Flashcards**: Recall the answer before you flip, then rate yourself. Your rating decides when the card comes back.
- **Quiz**: Guess what happens next in a short situation, or what a code snippet prints. A wrong guess points at the idea you haven't got yet.
- **Interview**: Answer out loud in 60 seconds, then compare with the key points. Gaps show up fast.
- **Step by step**: Step through a process one move at a time and watch what changes at each step.

## How does it help me remember?

It uses the two study methods with the strongest research behind them: active recall, where you answer before you see the answer, and spaced repetition, where each card comes back just before you would forget it.

- **Spaced repetition**: Each flashcard is scheduled by FSRS, an open-source scheduler that estimates when you're about to forget it. Easy cards drift further apart. Missed ones come straight back. [Try the spaced repetition calculator](https://studyvisually.com/spaced-repetition-calculator)
- **Active recall**: Flashcards, quiz questions and the timed explain-it answers all ask you to answer before you look. Pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick better than reading it again. [How active recall works](https://studyvisually.com/active-recall)

## Questions before you start

### Is StudyVisually free?

Yes. The built-in guide, every study mode and saved progress cost nothing. A free account also makes 5 decks a month from your own notes and includes 3 AI gradings or explanations in total. Basic ($4 a month) and Premium ($8 a month) add more decks and more AI help.

### Do I need an account?

No. Open the app and start studying, and your progress is saved in this browser. Sign in with your email when you want your progress on another device or want AI to build decks from your notes. Sign-in uses a one-time code sent to your inbox, so there is no password to remember.

### What can I turn into flashcards?

PDF files, text files (.txt and .md) and notes you paste in. Free and Basic read up to about 20 pages per deck. Premium reads up to about 50 pages and also reads scanned PDFs, where every page is a photo, by having AI copy the text. Images, PowerPoint files, videos and web links are not supported.

### Where is my progress saved?

Without an account, progress is saved in your browser's storage on this device, and you can export it to a file from the Home screen. When you sign in, it also syncs to your account, so you can carry on from another device. Clearing your browser data removes the browser copy only.

### How does spaced repetition decide when I see a card again?

It uses FSRS, a scheduling method that estimates when you are about to forget each card. After you rate a card Again, Hard, Good or Easy, the next review moves sooner or later. A card you keep getting right comes back after days, then weeks, then months. A card you miss returns within minutes.

### What does the AI do with my material?

When you make a deck, the text you add is sent to OpenAI, which writes the cards, questions and diagram. The text is saved with your deck so you can remake it later, and deleting the deck deletes it. Interview answers go to OpenAI only when you ask for AI grading or record a spoken answer.

### Who is the free AI agents guide for?

JavaScript developers who want to build AI agents. Its 9 parts and 106 concept cards go from how a language model works to tool calling, retrieval (RAG), LangChain and running an agent in production. Every concept has a free lesson page, and the same cards open in the app as flashcards, puzzles and interview questions.
